Description: Original antique wood-cut print of a massive explosion in the River Mersey. The actual explosion happened on the 15th of January 1864 when 11 tons of gunpowder exploded while the ship was moored just off Monks Ferry. The ship was just about to set sail for the West Indies when a accident appears to have happened while a lantern was lit in the early evening. The crew were saved by the Hove, a passing steamer.

Some browning/foxing. Text to the reverse. Some surface marks.
