I love doing the research on unusual prints but will admit to being rather surprised to find out that only 4 years after Maud Watson became the first women’s champion of Wimbledon in 1884, the fashion houses of London had already started to producing fashionable tennis clothing. Though the tennis racket shown in the print does look rather too small to be practical. Perhaps modeled more on a badminton racket by the engraver.
Doesn’t the ball holder look great though! I could just imagine Serina Williams walking out for the final this year with that hanging from her skirt. She would make such a fashion statement.
